It is the worst, most dysfunctional form of government in the country," said Democratic candidate for state Senate Diane Savino, who argued that a vote for her opponent, Republican Al Curtis, would essentially be a vote for a party that has continually proved its priorities are upstate.

Curtis did not deny that the Republican party had a stranglehold on the Senate, but said his political affiliation is a positive thing for the Island.

"If you are going to provide for the community," he said, "you have to have a seat at the table."
